The German Federal Ministry of Defense has halted the billion-euro F126 frigate project following massive cost overruns and delays, and has instead announced the procurement of eight MEKO A-200 frigates from the German manufacturer TKMS.
Background: The Failed F126 Project
The F126 project, originally planned as the Bundeswehr's largest naval procurement in decades, has failed according to the Ministry of Defense. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the Dutch general contractor Damen Naval had been unable to meet the project's time and financial framework conditions. The ministry had therefore pulled the emergency brake.
The originally planned costs for the F126 had been around ten billion euros. According to new calculations, however, total costs would have risen to up to 18.8 billion euros if alternative contractors were to be brought in. This would have made the project around eight billion euros more expensive compared to the original planning. A full 2.3 billion euros in taxpayers' money has already been spent on the venture, according to a ministry spokesperson.
