According to the news agency Reuters, the Federal Ministry of Economics is planning to build up a state gas reserve for emergencies, which is intended to prevent or at least delay bottlenecks in a shortage situation.

Concept and Size of the Reserve

The concept provides for the reserve to comprise around 24 terawatt hours of gas, as the ministry confirmed. "Im Bundeswirtschaftsministerium gibt es konkrete Pläne für eine staatliche Erdgasreserve für Krisenfälle," it said. The reserve would thus correspond to just under ten percent of Germany's storage capacity and would be significantly smaller than current market logistics, but is intended as an additional crisis instrument.
