Berlin, July 6, 2026

The German government intends to approve the budget draft for the federal budget for 2027 this week, as reported by government circles.

According to information from the German Press Agency, the draft envisions total expenditures of approximately 555 billion euros. The planned net new borrowing amounts to just under 119 billion euros, which is roughly eight billion euros above the figure estimated in the spring.

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil justifies the higher spending primarily with the financial consequences of the Iran war. These burdens have overtaken the original plans, according to his ministry. The federal government must simultaneously finance defense and security expenditures as well as social benefits.

The cabinet decision is scheduled for the current week. Subsequently, the Bundestag is to pass the budget by the end of the year. This requires parliamentary deliberations in the responsible specialized committees and in the plenary in the coming months.
