Wiesbaden, 08 June 2026

Incoming orders in German industry fell in April by 3.8 percent month-on-month, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, and thus significantly more sharply than economists had expected.

As the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced, orders fell by 3.8 percent compared to the previous month, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects. Economists had only expected a decline of 2.0 percent. In the less volatile three-month comparison, incoming orders from February to April were 3.1 percent below the level of the preceding three months.

Individual sectors were hit particularly hard. In mechanical engineering, orders fell by 7.4 percent, and in the manufacture of electrical equipment (-16.3 percent) the decline was even more pronounced. Order development was weighed down by a marked decline in new orders in the automotive industry (-5.3 percent month-on-month). In addition, the increase in March was slightly revised downward by half a percentage point to a gain of 4.5 percent.
