Germany's Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has said the current five-year statute of limitations for rape is too short and wants it extended to 20 years, as the Conference of Justice Ministers opened its spring meeting in Hamburg on Thursday.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Hubig argued that a 20-year limit, comparable to that for other serious offences, would be more appropriate. Under current law, she noted, particularly grave offences can expire after just five years, a situation she described as inadequate given the nature of the crime. "Aus Angst, Scham oder Traumatisierung zeigt nicht jedes Opfer eine solche Tat zeitnah an," she said, referring to the reasons victims often delay reporting.
