German main construction sector sees order intake rise in June after volatile year

The Federal Statistical Office reported that the June figures pointed to a stabilisation in the order situation, though officials cautioned that month-on-month movements in the sector have remained pronounced throughout 2026. Analysts tracking the data said the latest reading was consistent with a gradual return to steadier demand rather than a sudden acceleration.

Industry associations reacted cautiously. The Central Association of the German Building Trade (ZDB) and the German Construction Federation (HDB) both noted that the June uptick coincided with publicly financed projects in transport infrastructure, including road and rail schemes funded through federal spending programmes. "Public investment in transport infrastructure is providing a stabilising backbone for the sector," a sector representative said, attributing the improvement in part to those ongoing programmes.

However, the associations stressed that private commercial orders and residential building activity continued to lag behind. The HDB highlighted that while infrastructure pipelines were supporting larger contractors, smaller firms remained exposed to weakness in housing permissions and subdued commercial demand. Both groups called for clearer planning horizons and faster approval procedures to translate order momentum into actual building activity.

The main construction sector covers structural work including building construction above and below ground, civil engineering and related trades. Establishments with 20 or more employees account for the bulk of sector turnover and are the segment tracked monthly by Destatis, the federal statistics agency, making them a reliable early indicator of activity in the wider industry.

Economists said the June reading, while positive, should be read alongside revisions to earlier months that had previously suggested a sharper downturn. Several banks revised their sector outlook modestly upward in light of the data, though most still forecast full-year output below 2024 levels. The picture is complicated by ongoing cost pressures for materials and labour, which continue to weigh on margins even as order books improve.

For construction firms, the practical question is how quickly the new orders feed into site activity. Industry representatives said conversion from order to output typically takes several months, particularly for complex infrastructure projects, meaning the full effect on employment and revenue is unlikely to be visible before the final quarter of 2026.

The Federal Statistical Office is scheduled to publish July figures in late September, which will indicate whether the June stabilisation extends into the second half of the year or proves to be a one-off rebound. Industry groups said they expected public infrastructure spending to remain the principal driver of activity through the autumn, with private-sector demand dependent on interest-rate movements and housing-market conditions.
