The DRK Blood Donation Service West has warned of a significant decline in blood donations in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland in view of an ongoing heatwave, and is calling on the population to donate.

At many blood donation appointments, the number of donors fell significantly short of demand due to the high temperatures, the German Red Cross (DRK) announced. As a result, around 40 percent less blood was donated than is required for a stable supply. "The heatwave of the past few days has led to considerably fewer blood donations in the west," the DRK Blood Donation Service explained.
