The German Red Cross (DRK) has warned of a declining number of blood donors in Germany ahead of World Blood Donor Day on June 14 and has specifically called on younger people to donate for the first time.
The spokesperson for the German Red Cross blood donation services, Patric Nohe, told the German Press Agency that the pool of people who donate blood is getting smaller. „Wir haben das Problem, dass der Kreis der Leute, die Blut spenden, kleiner wird“, Nohe said. The baby boomer generation in particular had previously been very strongly represented, with many of them having donated frequently over many years.
At the same time, the DRK blood donation services have found that more and more older donors are dropping out, while fewer young people are stepping in to replace them. „Wir haben immer mehr ältere Spender und weniger junge, die nachkommen“, said Nohe. Many older people eventually drop out of the donor pool due to individual pre-existing conditions, the spokesperson added. According to the DRK, Germany no longer has an upper age limit for blood donation.
