German rock icon Udo Lindenberg hospitalized, cancels hometown appearance

The canceled event was one of several special occasions planned around Lindenberg's 80th birthday, which he celebrated on May 17. The 'Panikrocker,' as he is affectionately known, has been a towering figure in German rock music for decades.

Exhibition in Gronau Unaffected

Despite the setback, a major exhibition dedicated to Lindenberg's life and work will proceed as planned. The special exhibition 'Udo L. – aus dem Pott ins Hotel' at the rock'n'popmuseum in Gronau is not affected by the cancellation.

The exhibition is set to open on Thursday, June 4, and will run until the end of 2026. It is funded by the Brost Foundation and serves as a posthumous-style honor for Lindenberg's milestone birthday in his birthplace.

The centerpiece of the Gronau exhibition is a faithful replica of Lindenberg's hotel room in Hamburg, offering fans an intimate glimpse into his personal world. The museum is located in the city where the musician was born.

Artistic Legacy on Display

A few weeks ago, Lindenberg personally opened another exhibition in Werl, approximately 100 kilometers from Gronau. That show displays his pictures and drawings, with titles referencing his well-known songs such as 'Sie spielte Cello,' 'Hinterm Horizont,' and 'Ich mach mein Ding.'

The Werl exhibition highlights Lindenberg's work as a visual artist, a less publicized but significant aspect of his creative output. It remains open to visitors.

Lindenberg's influence on German music and culture spans more than five decades. His signature blend of rock music with German-language lyrics broke new ground and earned him a devoted following across generations.

News of his hospitalization has prompted an outpouring of well-wishes from fans and fellow artists. The Brost Foundation has not indicated when Lindenberg might resume public engagements.
