ROME/BERLIN, April 30, 2026 Germany Italy criticize Israel Gaza flotilla interception Germany and Italy have jointly condemned Israel’s interception of the "Global Sumud" aid flotilla in international waters, warning the action may violate international law.

International Law Concerns

In a rare joint statement, the governments of Germany and Italy expressed "grave concern" over Israel’s naval operation against the pro-Palestinian aid convoy. The statement suggested the interception west of Crete could contravene maritime legal standards.

"Wir rufen zur uneingeschränkten Achtung des geltenden Völkerrechts sowie zur Unterlassung unverantwortlicher Handlungen auf," the declaration stated, emphasizing the need for "unconditional respect for international law" and avoidance of "irresponsible actions."

The Israeli navy had stopped more than 20 vessels belonging to the "Global Sumud Flotilla" and detained dozens of activists, according to corroborated reports. Rome and Berlin defended international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza "in accordance with international law and standards," while urging restraint from all parties.

Flotilla’s Mission and Previous Attempts

The flotilla, which departed from Sicily on Sunday, aimed to breach Israel’s 19-year naval blockade of Gaza—jointly enforced by Egypt since 2007—and deliver supplies to the conflict zone. Organizers also sought to establish a permanent humanitarian corridor to the besieged territory.
