Wrexham, 11 July 2026
Germany's U19 national team lost 0-2 to Spain in the European Championship final in Wrexham on Saturday, conceding goals on either side of halftime to fall short of a third title at the age-group level.
Spain's Hugo Lopez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, converting a rebound after a long-range effort deflected off the post. Mario Rivas added a second three minutes after the restart, heading in from close range after a corner from the right caught the German defence out of position. The two goals, both coming in the moments around the break, settled a final that Spain had entered as heavy favourites.
Goals either side of halftime decide the final
Germany's coach Christian Wörns set his side up in a 4-5-1 formation designed to deny Spain space, and the plan largely worked through the opening hour. Moritz Reimers of Holstein Kiel forced a sharp save from the Spanish goalkeeper Gonzalez in the 57th minute, with the keeper tipping the ball onto the post before clearing off the line. Wörns did not rotate his key players, in contrast to the 0-4 loss to Spain in the final group-stage match.
As the game wore on, Germany pushed numbers forward in search of a way back. Montrell Culbreath of Bayer 04 Leverkusen was involved in several promising late moves, while Jykese Fields had two opportunities in the closing stages that went unconverted. None of the chances altered the outcome, and Spain held on to extend its record as the most successful nation in U19 European Championship history.
