Kronstorf, July 11, 2026
The US technology group Google has submitted new plans in Kronstorf in Upper Austria for a large data center covering the entire 50-hectare site, triggering criticism from environmental activists and state politicians.
The groundbreaking for the project took place after 18 years of planning at the end of April, with the opening scheduled for 2027 according to Google. At the time, the opening ceremony still spoke of a maximum electricity demand capacity of 150 megawatts. Now the newly submitted plans are said to cover the entire 50-hectare site and make the location one of the largest within the group. According to reports, Google plans to invest several billion euros at the site from 2027 and create 100 new jobs.
Google itself speaks in a statement to the APA of a possible maximum capacity of 500 megawatts at full expansion. "Aktuell haben wir keinen Zeitplan für weitere Neuigkeiten", was all the tech group said in response to an APA inquiry. The discrepancy between the originally communicated 150 megawatts and the now-mentioned 500 megawatts is fueling additional debate.
