In Kronstorf in the district of Linz-Land, resistance is growing against the planned expansion of the Google data center currently under construction, against which environmental organizations, the Greens, and a citizens' initiative are mobilizing.

Expansion to two and a half times the size

US corporation Google has submitted further expansion phases for its Kronstorf site in Upper Austria to the municipality and the district administration for approval. Economic Provincial Councillor Markus Achleitner (ÖVP) confirmed last week that the investment will be significantly larger than originally planned. Achleitner described the rapid application for full expansion as "überraschend, zugleich aber ein positives Signal für den Wirtschaftsstandort Oberösterreich". According to Achleitner, Google is justifying the swift expansion by citing the globally rising demand for computing capacity for artificial intelligence, as ORF Upper Austria reported.
