Google Earth Now Offers Flight Simulator Directly in the Browser

The path to the simulator leads via the "Explore Google Earth" button in the top right of the homepage. You then find the "Flight Simulator" option under "Tools." The launch is part of a Google initiative to extend the Google Earth website interface with features that were previously reserved for the app. According to the company, these features include elevation profiles, new import types, additional data layers, and the flight simulator.

How to Operate the Flight Simulator

During flight, 3D buildings and high-resolution images are loaded dynamically. This also means that at extremely high speeds or with slow internet connections, there can be temporary loading delays. At high speeds or with a slow connection, delays can occur. In doing so, the browser service responds to the limited bandwidth of some connections.

The aircraft is controlled either using the arrow keys on the keyboard or with the mouse. The arrow keys steer the aircraft; "Page Up" and "Page Down" control the thrust. The flight simulator in Google Earth is essentially an alternative navigation mode for the application, controlled with mouse and keyboard. There is also no aircraft model in the traditional sense, and there is no cockpit either, but there is an unobstructed view of the surroundings.

Simplified Physics Without a Claim to Realism

Takeoff and landing are not possible – when the program starts, you are already in the air. You don't have to worry about fuel or G-forces in the Google Earth flight simulator. If the aircraft hits the ground directly, the simulation is paused. With a click on "Crashed! Restart," the aircraft is immediately put back into the air at a safe, playable altitude.

As the company explains, the flight physics are heavily simplified and are not intended for "highly realistic aerodynamic training." The flight physics are quite simple. Google writes on X that the offering is aimed at casual pilots with no prior experience and is meant to be "just for fun." In doing so, the company deliberately positions the tool as leisure entertainment.

Differentiation from Microsoft Flight Simulator

You shouldn't expect a scope comparable to Microsoft Flight Simulator. Microsoft's "real" flight simulator relies on Bing map data for its photorealistic world in order to depict the globe realistically. The three-dimensional world and object data of the flight simulator originally released in 2020 amounts to more than 2.5 petabytes. Google Earth, by contrast, relies on simplified physics and significantly easier access.
