The Austrian government is raising its annual subsidy for energy-intensive industrial companies to a total of 250 million euros starting in 2027, as emerged from the package unveiled on Wednesday in the press foyer.

The package consists of two components: 175 million euros will flow into the Electricity Cost Compensation Act (SAG), and the remaining 75 million euros are earmarked for the industrial electricity price. With this, the coalition of ÖVP and SPÖ aims to secure the competitiveness of domestic key industries in light of strongly fluctuating wholesale prices.

The background to the increase is the persistently high volatility on European electricity markets. In particular, the wholesale price for monthly futures on a six-month average has, according to industry observers, established itself as a key benchmark for the burden on companies. The subsidy is intended to prevent production sites from being relocated abroad.
