Vienna, 08 July 2026
The Austrian government has introduced a government bill into the National Council that would largely end family allowance for people in basic welfare support – particularly for Ukrainian displaced persons – with a supplementary provision.
The amendment provides that, in principle, no family allowance will be paid in the future to persons who are in basic welfare support. The previous regulation, which had only been introduced last October, is already set to expire on 30 June according to the information available. The speed of the new bill is justified by the approaching end of the old provision.
For the current year 2026, 65 million euros are earmarked in the budget for the planned supplementary benefit. In the following years, the funds are to decline significantly: 45.1 million euros in 2027, 24.4 million euros in 2028, and from 2029 onwards 14.8 million euros annually. The government hopes this will provide noticeable relief for the federal budget.
