The third-division club SG Sonnenhof Großaspach has defeated second-division side Arminia Bielefeld in the first round of the DFB-Pokal via a penalty shootout, causing a cup upset.
Before 5,719 spectators at the Mechatronik Arena, an evenly matched duel unfolded between the hosting third-division club SG Sonnenhof Großaspach and the favored second-division side Arminia Bielefeld. After 120 minutes had failed to produce a winner, the match had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Over the course of regular time and extra time, both teams engaged in an open exchange of blows. Großaspach, which had earned its place in the DFB-Pokal through the qualifying rounds, held its own against the financially far better equipped second-division side over the full distance and forced the decisive shootout from the spot through focused defensive work.
