Fritz Güntzler, a CDU Bundestag member who pulled out of an incoming cabinet role at short notice, has publicly thanked Chancellor Friedrich Merz for keeping their subsequent phone conversation "äuß erst wertschätzend" despite the disruption to the reshuffle.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland on Friday, Güntzler said he had informed Merz that he could not take up a post he had been lined up for. The CDU politician described the chancellor's tone as "äuß erst wertschätzend" and stressed that Merz "did not become angry."

Background to Güntzler's withdrawal

Güntzler did not specify which ministry he had been expected to join or why he reversed course so shortly before the planned appointment was to take effect. The speed of the reversal nonetheless forced the chancellor's office to rework elements of its personnel lineup within hours.
