Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder has defended Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) against criticism from his own ranks over the cabinet reshuffle and the handling of dismissed Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU).

In the ZDF summer interview in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg, Söder said responsibility for the turbulent days surrounding Schnieder's removal lay "sicher nicht beim Bundeskanzler". Schnieder should have considered that beforehand – "der Kollege" should have thought about it earlier. He finds the personnel changes announced so far – Nina Warken as new Chancellery chief, Carsten Linnemann as Health Minister, and Thorsten Frei as Union parliamentary group leader – "sehr gut".
