Hamburg, 29 May 2026
Around 1.3 million eligible voters in Hamburg are casting ballots on Sunday in a referendum on whether the city should pursue a bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044.
The referendum question reads: "I am in favor of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) applying with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as the host location for the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the years 2036, 2040 or 2044." Voting is possible until 6 p.m. in 178 polling stations, with the first results expected around 6:30 p.m. from the Statistical Office North.
The red-green Senate under First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) and Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens) initiated the Olympic bid. The project is supported by the SPD, the Greens and the opposition CDU, while the Left party (Die Linke) opposes hosting the Games on the Elbe and Alster.
