Last year, 1,575 people in Austria became victims of violence-related hate crime, as shown by the "Hate Crime Report 2025" published a few weeks ago by the Ministry of the Interior.
The annual balance identifies a clear majority of those affected as Austrian citizens. The offenses were predominantly committed with racist, antisemitic, or homophobic motives, with the report citing prejudice based on presumed sexual orientation as one of the most frequent motives.
Particularly serious is the fact that almost a quarter of those affected by violence based on their presumed sexual orientation sustained bodily harm (23 percent). This figure makes clear that real physical harm to those affected lies behind the abstract statistics.
