Demographic profile and citizenship of the convicted
After the low reached during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, the curve of convictions in Austria had started to rise again, but in 2025 this upward trend came to a halt. The data published by Statistik Austria indicate 27,620 final convictions, almost the same value as in 2024 (27,717) and a year-on-year decrease of 0.3%. In parallel, the number of registered offenses fell by 1% to 45,506.
Demographically, the structure of convicted persons remains heavily skewed towards the male gender: 84.5% of those convicted in 2025 were men. Of the total, 85.7% were of legal age for criminal purposes (at least 21 years old) at the time of the offense, 8.4% were young adults between 18 and 20 years old, while 6% fell into the minor category between 14 and 17 years old.
