Heatwave in Austria: Up to 34 Degrees, Little Relief

On Wednesday afternoon, rain showers and thunderstorms may occur according to ZAMG only in the southern mountain regions as well as along the main Alpine ridge. In the rest of the country, it will remain predominantly dry according to the forecast, with humid air in many places.

Isolated Thunderstorms Only in the Mountains

In the coming days, the heat stress will remain high, especially in urban areas. Nighttime temperatures will drop only slightly, making it harder for the body to recover. ZAMG points out that water temperatures in the lakes continue to rise, in some cases reaching values above 25 degrees.

For sensitive groups such as the elderly, children, and the chronically ill, the persistent heat means additional strain. Doctors advise avoiding physical exertion during midday hours and drinking sufficient fluids.

Strain on People and Nature

The warmth is also noticeable in the mountains: Even at higher elevations, temperatures are clearly above average. Hikers should start tours early in the morning and carry enough water, ZAMG recommends.

The weather outlook for the weekend indicates no change according to current models. Although isolated heat thunderstorms may occur in the mountains, widespread precipitation that would bring noticeable cooling is not expected.

The ongoing heat phase is part of a summer that has seen multiple temperature records in Austria. Weather services are monitoring the development closely, as longer heat periods increase the risk of forest fires and cause water levels in rivers and lakes to drop.
