Due to the third heatwave within two months, the French energy company EDF temporarily shut down three nuclear reactors in Golfech, Bugey, and Chooz on Sunday.
Background: Third heatwave in two months
The operator EDF told the news agency AFP that the reactors in Golfech on the Garonne, in Bugey on the Rhône, and in Chooz on the Meuse had been taken offline. Due to the weather conditions and to comply with the regulations for the discharge of cooling water "and thus to protect the environment," reactors in Golfech on the Garonne, in Bugey on the Rhône, and in Chooz on the Meuse had been shut down. EDF as the operator is obligated to reduce the output of its nuclear power plants under certain circumstances.
France is currently experiencing the third heatwave in two months. Already during the second heatwave in June, EDF had to shut down reactors. The current measure affects three facilities that were completely shut down, while another seven reactors were only throttled back.
