On Thursday, widespread sunshine is expected once again. The high-pressure system "Laurent" will bring a sunny day in the north and center of the country according to the DWD, while showers or thunderstorms may occur in the south. Thunderstorms are possible along the Baltic Sea.

However, a change in weather is on the horizon by the end of the week. "While Thursday will likely bring plenty of sunshine once again, the weather will become significantly more changeable toward the end of the week," said the DWD expert. Showers and thunderstorms will become more frequent, and on Sunday, highs are expected to remain below the 30-degree mark throughout Germany.

Weather Change by the Weekend

Despite the announced cooling, it will remain summery warm. "The highs will likely no longer exceed the 30-degree mark anywhere in Germany by Sunday," explained Eifried. Nevertheless, it will remain "summery warm." In the north and northeast, temperatures of 26 to 31 degrees are then expected, and 21 to 25 degrees along the coasts.

For Monday, the DWD expects a continuation of the sunny weather, albeit with limitations. "On Monday, the sunny weather will continue with limitations," said Eifried from the DWD's weather forecasting center in Offenbach. Highs will be 25 to 29 degrees in the north and northeast, 19 to 24 degrees on the coast, and 30 to 36 degrees elsewhere.

European Context of the Heatwave

Wednesday will also have people in the southwest sweating particularly heavily. The new week will bring more hot days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees according to the DWD, and tropical nights are possible. It remains hot in many places for now, but the weather service is announcing noticeable cooling by the weekend.

The DWD also points to the European context: Even Southern Europeans, who are accustomed to heat, are reaching their limits with temperatures of 40 degrees and above. The EU climate change service Copernicus had previously recorded the hottest June in Western Europe since measurements began.

Overall, it is clear: The heatwave in Germany is part of a larger European pattern. While the short-term forecast promises relief by the weekend, the long-term trend toward higher temperatures remains a topic for weather services and health authorities.
