In Italy, the highest alert level is in effect due to a record heat wave with temperatures around 40 degrees and tropical nights in dozens of cities, putting massive pressure on people and nature.
Scale of the Heat Wave
Authorities have declared the highest alert level across large parts of Italy. According to available reports, temperatures around 40 degrees are being widely reached, accompanied by so-called tropical nights, during which values barely drop even after nightfall. The combination of daytime heat and a lack of nighttime cooling is considered particularly taxing on the human organism, the elderly, and the chronically ill.
