Cause: Persistent High Over the Mediterranean

The large metropolitan regions in northern Italy and important cities in the center of the country are particularly affected. In the red zones, authorities are urging people to avoid spending time outdoors during the midday hours, to drink sufficient fluids, and to keep a close eye on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

Climatologist Lorenzo Giovannini from the University of Trento explained to the news agency ANSA that the large-scale weather situation is currently showing little sign of weakening. The combination of long duration, high nighttime lows, and high humidity makes this heat wave particularly burdensome on health – the body can hardly recover at night.

The Italian government and municipal health services have activated their heat protection plans. In several cities, air-conditioned public spaces have been opened, mobile drinking water stations have been set up, and additional hospital capacity has been put on standby. Employers have been called upon to allow heat-related work breaks for outdoor workers.

Measures by the Authorities

Transport and energy infrastructure are also under pressure. Italian grid operators have called on the public to use electricity sparingly in order to limit the strain on the power grid caused by the massive use of air conditioning. Rail services are running at adjusted speeds to avoid damage to tracks and overhead lines.

Authorities are also warning of an increased risk of forest fires. Fires have been reported in several regions, fueled by the dry conditions. Giovannini stressed that the large-scale weather pattern will only recede step by step and that individual hot days are likely to persist well into the second half of August. Authorities are asking the public to continue taking the warnings seriously.

Health experts recommend consistently avoiding the hot hours between roughly 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., eating light meals, and paying attention to warning signs from the body such as dizziness, headaches, or palpitations. If such symptoms occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Temperatures are also above average in other Mediterranean countries, which is once again intensifying the debate about adapting cities to climate change. Municipalities are increasingly discussing more green spaces, cooler building materials, and the expansion of drinking water fountains in public spaces.
