A 65-year-old hiker fell approximately 20 meters at the Kleiner Sonnstein near Traunkirchen in the Salzkammergut and had to be recovered by emergency services.

The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the Kleiner Sonnstein, a well-known lookout mountain in the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria. According to the current state of the investigation, the 65-year-old mountaineer strayed from the path for reasons that remain unclear and fell about 20 meters into a narrow, tree-covered ravine.

Difficult rescue in the narrow ravine

The fall at the Kleiner Sonnstein presented the emergency services with significant problems, according to eyewitnesses and rescuers. Because the ravine is very narrow and overgrown with trees, the rescue was extremely demanding for the emergency crews. The recovery had to be carried out with ropes and special equipment in order to extract the victim from the rough terrain as gently as possible.
