Three exhausted mountaineers rescued from the Traunstein at night

The three mountaineers were uninjured but clearly exhausted, it was further stated. The rescue teams provided them with care on site and subsequently flew them down into the valley.

Difficult ascent via the Naturfreundesteig

The Traunstein is one of the most popular but also demanding hiking mountains in the Salzkammergut. The Naturfreundesteig, which was chosen as the ascent route, features partly exposed and steep sections and requires sure-footedness as well as solid equipment.

According to the rescuers, the three young people had not carried adequate lighting, among other things. Headlamps or flashlights are indispensable on a tour in the evening hours, the rescue teams emphasized.

According to the mountain rescue service's account, the rescue operation proceeded as planned and without complications. The helpers lifted the exhausted individuals out using the winch and brought them to the base, where they were given medical examinations.

This case is part of a series of operations on the Traunstein that, during the summer months, regularly also involve inexperienced hikers. The Gmunden mountain rescue service regularly points out that tours should not be underestimated even under seemingly easy conditions.

For the coming weeks, the rescue teams expect the frequency of tours on the Traunstein and other peaks in the Salzkammergut to remain high. According to the mountain rescue service, hikers should always carry equipment, a map, sufficient water, and an emergency option for raising the alarm.

The operation ended in the late evening hours. The mountain rescue service did not provide any further information regarding the identities of those rescued.
