South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo has stepped down after his team's early group-stage elimination from the FIFA World Cup, the Yonhap news agency reported.
The South Korean national team had to leave the tournament — staged in an XXL format — after just three matches in the group stage. Drawn into a group with co-host Mexico, South Africa and the Czech Republic, the side followed up a 2-1 opening win against the Czech Republic with defeats to Mexico and South Africa, finishing third in the group on three points — not enough to advance to the knockout round.
Tournament timeline
Hong Myung-bo, who had been reappointed South Korea head coach in July 2024, reacted to the elimination by tendering his resignation a few days later. Before his coaching career, he himself had been a professional footballer and had in the meantime served as secretary general of the Korea Football Association. The ex-player and former secretary general thus ended — after barely two years in office — a tenure that has now concluded in a sporting debacle.
