According to analysis of Kpler data, the Houthi rebels — allied with Iran — control the Bab al-Mandab strait between Yemen and Djibouti, thereby putting international shipping in the Red Sea under pressure.

The Bab al-Mandab strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is considered one of the most important sea lanes in the world. A significant share of global container and tanker trade between Europe and Asia passes through it. The Kpler data on which the assessment is based show that the Houthi rebels effectively exercise control over shipping traffic in this section.

With the island of Perim, which lies in the middle of the strait, the Houthis hold a geographically key position. From there, ships can be observed, identified, and, if necessary, stopped. Control over Perim is considered decisive in enabling the rebels to effectively influence traffic through Bab al-Mandab.
