Yemen: Major Offensive Against Houthis Announced

The government described the declared goal of the mission as freeing the country from the grip of the Houthi militia. The rebels control large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, as well as strategically important areas along the coast on the Red Sea. The internationally recognized government is currently based in Aden and is supported by a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

The Houthi militia, which is supported by Iran, has repeatedly attacked targets in Saudi Arabia in recent years. As recently as 3 October 2026, flames burned at a facility of the Saudi oil company Aramco south of Riyadh. Such attacks on Saudi Arabian territory had recently significantly heightened tensions in the region.

Attacks on Saudi Arabia and Shipping

At the same time, the Houthi militia is attracting international attention with attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The strait is considered one of the most important trade routes in the world. The British maritime trade supervision authority said that the crew was safe after a ship in the region had been the target of an attack.

The area around Dhubab on the Bab al-Mandab Strait has repeatedly been the scene of military confrontations in recent months. The Yemeni army had attacked positions of the Houthi militia there in order to regain control over the strategically significant coastal section. The situation remains unclear.

Army Preparations

According to government information, the Yemeni army is preparing for a broad-based ground offensive. Details on troop strength, the exact start date, or the operational areas have not been made public. Observers interpret the announcement as a sign of a new level of escalation in the conflict that has been ongoing for years.

International mediation efforts had made only limited progress in recent months. A ceasefire negotiated under the mediation of the United Nations had been broken several times. The prospects for a diplomatic solution are currently considered low.

International Mediation and Humanitarian Situation

According to aid organizations, the humanitarian situation in Yemen is already catastrophic. Large parts of the population depend on emergency aid, and the infrastructure is largely destroyed. A further escalation of the fighting would further worsen the supply situation.
