The Shiite Houthi militia announced on July 20, 2026 via video message an immediate shipping ban toward Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea; according to media reports, Iran allegedly urged the militia to take this step in order to increase pressure on the USA and its allies.
The Houthi militia controls the Bab al-Mandab strait from Yemen, which, together with the Strait of Hormuz, is one of the most important sea routes for global trade. With the latest declaration, the militia directed itself explicitly against Saudi Arabia: A "ban on shipping" applies there for Saudi Arabia effective immediately, according to a video message from the rebels. The region at Bab al-Mandab has thus once again become a focal point of the conflict between the Houthis and the Sunni kingdom.
