Hamburg, August 19, 2026
Hamburger SV announced on Wednesday the loan signing of Belgian center-back Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds United, who is planned to succeed Luka Vuskovic in defense in the new Bundesliga season.
With the signing of Bornauw, HSV is responding to the departure of Vuskovic and closing a gap that had opened up in central defense. The 27-year-old Belgian is moving on loan to the Elbe for one year, with no purchase option agreed.
Claus Costa explained the rationale behind the transfer with reference to the club's requirements profile. "Sebastiaan fits our requirements profile perfectly. He brings the physical presence, the tackling strength, and the qualities in the air that we want for our defense," Costa said.
