Kiel, 04 July 2026
The 2. Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel has signed former Hamburger SV captain Sebastian Schonlau and presented him on Saturday as their sixth new arrival for the 2026/27 season.
Schonlau moves on a free transfer from Vancouver Whitecaps to northern Germany and receives a contract in Kiel running until 30 June 2027, with an option for a further season. The club did not officially announce the contract length; the details are based on data from Transfermarkt. According to the club, the deal includes performance-related clauses.
The centre-back had only moved to North America's Major League Soccer in the summer of 2025, but made just one appearance there due to injury. Before his MLS spell, Schonlau played four years at Hamburger SV, which he captained from 2021 to 2025.
In Hamburg, the Lower Saxony native made 102 second-division appearances for the Rothosen according to club figures and served as an extended arm of the coaching staff during that period. Overall, Schonlau brings more than 260 competitive appearances in the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and 3. Liga.
