Holstein Kiel signs centre-back Sebastian Schonlau

Schonlau and Walter: familiar faces

In Kiel, the 31-year-old, born on 5 August 1994, meets familiar faces: head coach Tim Walter already coached the defender at HSV and worked with him there for three years. „Bascho war in Hamburg mein Kapitän und einer meiner wichtigsten Ansprechpartner innerhalb der Mannschaft“, sagte Walter. „Wir gewinnen mit ihm eine absolute Führungspersönlichkeit und einen sehr erfahrenen Innenverteidiger, der unsere Spielphilosophie verinnerlicht hat und der sich zu einhundert Prozent mit seiner neuen Aufgabe hier in Kiel identifiziert."

According to Walter, Schonlau made 78 appearances under him in Hamburg. The coach sees the new signing as a player who will fit seamlessly into the northern German environment – not least because Schonlau knows the „norddeutsche Luft" extremely well, as sporting managing director Olaf Rebbe emphasised.

Rebbe also highlighted the new signing's character: „Sebastian ist ein Spieler mit großer Erfahrung und einer außergewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit." The sporting director added: „Wir haben uns in den letzten Tagen intensiv ausgetauscht und gegenseitig die Karten gelegt für eine gute Zusammenarbeit."

Stations of a Bundesliga career

At HSV, Schonlau also demonstrated „eine außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeit" in the past, it was said from Kiel. In northern Germany he will also meet two former teammates from his Hamburg days, which should make settling in easier.

Before his move to Vancouver, his previous clubs included HSV and also SC Verl in the 2014/15 season, before Schonlau continued his path into professional football via SC Paderborn 07. At the Whitecaps he formed a prominent centre-back partnership with former Bayern professional Thomas Müller, but barely featured due to injury.

At Vancouver, which according to club figures sits top of the MLS table and has a total squad market value of €59.75 million, Schonlau's playing time was thus limited to a brief appearance. The Canadian club's head coach is Jesper Sørensen.

Holstein Kiel gear up for the 2. Bundesliga

Holstein Kiel, known in the league as „die Störche", are currently preparing for their return to the 2. Bundesliga. The Kiel squad comprises 31 players according to club figures, with Schonlau the sixth external new signing for the upcoming season.

With the transfer back to German professional football, Schonlau finds a new sporting home after a brief North American experience. His current market value is listed at €500,000.
