Budapest, 30 June 2026
Hungary registered a new national heat record on Tuesday, with a temperature of 42 degrees Celsius measured in Szécsény near the Slovak border.
Record value in Szécsény and Budapest
In the northern town of Szécsény near the border with Slovakia, the thermometer rose to 42 degrees on Tuesday, the national weather service announced. This surpassed the previous heat record from 2007, which had stood at 41.9 degrees. An extremely high value of 41 degrees was also measured in Budapest, eclipsing the previous benchmark for the capital.
Preliminary data indicate that both the national and the capital-specific records for the highest temperature ever measured have been broken, said meteorologist Anna Kuntar-Molnar in an online video. Final confirmation of the figures by the weather service was still pending, but the preliminary measurements left no doubt about the historic dimension of the day.
