The crime took place on a busy street with various establishments. A police spokeswoman stated: "Dort gibt es verschiedene Lokalitäten. Entsprechend hatten wir dann auch den Publikumsverkehr." The presence of numerous passers-by facilitates the investigations, as many people observed the crime. Witnesses had overpowered the man and held him until the police arrived: "Der Angreifer sei von Zeugen überwältigt und festgehalten worden, bis die Polizei kam."

The public prosecutor's office cites excessive possessiveness and jealousy as the motive. The woman had expressed her desire for a divorce in August 2025. The man had not accepted this wish. The public prosecutor's office stated that the man had acted on the assumption that "sie gehe ihm fremd". The couple had been married since 1991, but had already been living separately for several years, according to the public prosecutor's office. The woman had taken the man back into the marital home in the meantime, it was further stated.

Background: Threats and failed separation

The public prosecutor's office also described previous threats by the man: He had repeatedly threatened to kill his wife if she sought a divorce. However, the later victim had rejected offers of help from the police – "in der Vorstellung, der Beschuldigte werde ihr nichts antun, da er sie noch liebe". In the run-up to the crime, the man then decided on Tuesday evening to kill his wife out of "übersteigertem Besitzdenken und Eifersucht".

For the residents and passers-by, the crime is a severe shock. A police spokeswoman said that the crime in the open street was for the witnesses "psychisch eine entsprechende Belastung, wenn man so etwas miterleben musste". Pastoral care was offered on site. The day after the crime, bloodstains were still visible on the street; traces on the ground were marked with blue circles.

The shock was also palpable in the immediate vicinity of the city center. Holger Winter, head of the nearby public library, said that the library had noticeably less foot traffic on Wednesday. He and his team are deeply affected. Resident Heike Koch, who said she has lived in Kelkheim for 40 years, expressed her dismay at what happened in her city: "Ich wohne seit 40 Jahren in Kelkheim."

The Frankfurt public prosecutor's office is conducting the investigation on suspicion of murder for base motives. At the same time, investigators are examining whether the crime may have been an extended suicide, in which the man had also intended to kill himself or others.
