A 60-year-old man killed his 58-year-old wife with a machete on Tuesday evening in the center of Kelkheim in the Main-Taunus district; eyewitnesses overpowered the attacker and held him until the police arrived.

According to the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office, the crime took place on Tuesday evening around 9 p.m. near the market square in the center of Kelkheim. The Frankfurt public prosecutor's office said on Wednesday: "Die Tat ereignete sich vor einer Vielzahl von Zeugen." An eyewitness reported that he had been standing about five meters from the scene of the crime. He described the attacker as visibly intoxicated. He told reporters: "Ich bin um mein Leben gerannt."

Investigators accuse the 60-year-old Croatian citizen of murder for base motives. An investigating judge at the Frankfurt Regional Court issued an arrest warrant against the suspect, who has been in pretrial detention since then, the public prosecutor's office further announced. The suspect was injured during his arrest. According to the information, the woman sustained "mindestens 30 abgrenzbare Stich- und Schnittverletzungen im Bereich des Kopfes, Halses, Nackens und Oberkörpers"; she died at the scene.
