A 52-year-old Mexican man, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who according to his family had lived in the United States for 35 years, was shot dead in Houston, Texas, during a traffic stop by officers from the US immigration agency ICE.
Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia shared on the platform X that she had received this information in a conversation with acting ICE director David Venturella. According to her, Salgado Araujo was not the actual target of the operation. Garcia said the man was killed by plainclothes officers, without body camera footage and "without answers for his family." The Department of Homeland Security had previously stated that the officers were on their way to a suspect and had stopped Salgado Araujo because he resembled the actual target of the operation. A spokesperson said that when the officers returned to the address on Tuesday, "they observed a white van with a person resembling the individual they were looking for" and initiated the traffic stop.
