The Munich-based Ifo Institute has concluded in an assessment that the fuel discount for diesel was only partially passed on to consumers, while Super E5 and Super E10 benefited almost in full.

The fuel tax cut, known as the fuel discount (Tankrabatt), was introduced during the energy crisis to ease the burden on drivers. However, the discount amounted to around 17 cents. As the Ifo Institute now reports, the pass-through of this relief to end customers varied significantly depending on the type of fuel.

Gasoline Benefits, Diesel Lags Behind

For Super E5 and Super E10, the discount was passed on almost in full, according to the institute's assessment. Specifically, the researchers calculated 17 cents per liter for Super E5 and 16 cents per liter for Super E10, placing these figures very close to the actual tax reduction. Florian Neumeier, deputy head of the ifo Center for Public Finance, stated: "Damit wurde der Tankrabatt beim Superbenzin nahezu vollständig an die Autofahrer weitergegeben".
