In the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, reported Ebola infections have crossed the threshold of 8,000 cases, while the African health authority Africa CDC has simultaneously recorded a 25 percent decline in Ituri province over the past three weeks.

Outbreak expands in the northeast

The epidemic continues to be concentrated in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Ituri and the neighboring province of North Kivu have been the main hotspots of the outbreak for months. According to the latest data from Africa CDC, the total number of registered Ebola cases has risen above the 8,000 mark, making this outbreak one of the largest in the region in recent years.

In its latest briefing, however, Africa CDC also highlighted a positive development: in Ituri, the number of weekly reported cases fell by 25 percent over the past three weeks. The authority views this trend as a sign that the measures taken are working in parts of the province.
