Indian startup Skyroot Aerospace has, with Vikram-1, placed a privately developed Indian launch vehicle into Earth orbit for the first time and deployed six payloads at an altitude of around 450 kilometers.
The multi-stage rocket lifted off shortly after 12:00 p.m. local time from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India's east coast, as shown by live broadcasts from Indian television channels. The mission, named "Aagman" – Sanskrit for "arrival" – was a test flight aimed at verifying the rocket's commercial viability.
On board were a total of six payloads, including a robotic arm for the retrieval of space debris in orbit as well as smaller satellites. According to the company, the Vikram-1 is designed for small satellites weighing up to 350 kilograms and is intended to carry satellites into space on demand in the future.
