Lausanne, 13 July 2026

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has lifted the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes, enabling them to return to international competition from 28 July.

The decision was taken by the ITTF Council, the federation's highest decision-making body, in Switzerland. It brings to an end a pause of more than four years during which athletes from Russia and Belarus were excluded from international competitions because of Russia's attack on Ukraine. The federation is responding to the lifting of restrictions with a change in the political framework for sport.

Background to the suspension

In concrete terms, the lifting of the suspension means that those affected will once again be allowed to compete from 28 July under a neutral flag — that is, without a national flag and without a national anthem. The national federations of Russia and Belarus are also being readmitted. Doubles partnerships with players from other nations are permitted once more. The measure follows a decision by the International Olympic Committee, which in recent months had recommended similar relaxations for several Olympic sports.
