French firefighters responded to more than 50 wildfires on farmland and in forests across southern France in a single 24-hour period, the fire service said, with most of the blazes quickly contained.
The surge of firefighting activity came as much of southern Europe endures a prolonged period of dry, hot weather that has repeatedly taxed emergency services. According to the fire service, more than 50 separate blazes broke out on agricultural land and in woodland over the 24 hours leading up to the report, a tally that highlights how thinly fire crews can be stretched during peak summer conditions.
Officials said most of the fires were brought under control quickly, limiting damage to surrounding communities. Even so, the sheer number of simultaneous outbreaks points to the scale of the challenge facing rural fire brigades when ignition sources, whether from farm machinery, lightning or discarded cigarettes, meet tinder-dry vegetation.
