Bahrain intercepted an Iranian attack aimed at US allies in the Persian Gulf, intensifying a regional confrontation that has drawn renewed diplomatic attention from Pakistan.

Bahraini air defenses intercepted an Iranian attack targeting US allies in the Persian Gulf, according to regional officials briefed on the incident. The interception, which occurred this week, marked a sharp escalation in the long-running confrontation between Iran and its Gulf neighbors and raised fresh questions about the security of Gulf shipping lanes.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, has been at the center of the dispute. Several Persian Gulf countries have stressed the need to reopen the strait without conditions, according to diplomatic statements circulated in recent days. Roughly a fifth of global oil trade transits the waterway, and any sustained disruption carries global economic consequences.

Diplomatic efforts in Bishkek

Diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis have involved Pakistan. Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said at a weekly press briefing in Islamabad that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The meeting took place on the margins of the summit, where Sharif pressed for de-escalation. "El portavoz del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, Tahir Andrabi, dijo en una rueda de prensa semanal en Islamabad que el primer ministro paquistaní Shehbaz Sharif se reunió con el presidente iraní Masoud Pezeshkian al margen de la cumbre de la Organización de Cooperación de Shanghái en Bishkek, Kirguistán, como parte de esos esfuerzos."
