A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, the U.S. military said, the third U.S. fatality reported since Friday.

U.S. Central Command announced the death in a post on social media, saying the service member was killed during a controlled detonation of an Iranian one-way attack drone in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. A second soldier sustained minor injuries in the same operation and is continuing to receive medical treatment, according to CENTCOM.

The U.S. military on Sunday reported the death of another U.S. soldier elsewhere, bringing the total U.S. military death toll in the Iran conflict to 17. The deaths on Friday in Jordan of two other service members marked the first reported U.S. military fatalities since the latest escalation of the conflict with Iran.
