US military reports third soldier killed since Friday as strikes on Iran enter ninth day

The U.S. military also reported that a third soldier remained missing after the Jordan operation. On Sunday, the military said unidentified human remains had been recovered following a thorough search of the base in Jordan, and an identification process is under way. According to U.S. media reports citing a U.S. official, the recovered remains are believed to be those of the missing soldier.

Trump ties new strikes to fallen troops

President Trump said the latest waves of strikes on Iran were 'in honor' of the dead service members. After landing in Maryland from an appearance at the World Cup final, Trump told reporters: 'We hit them very hard again tonight.' The U.S. attacks marked the ninth consecutive day of bombing, with U.S. strikes targeting bridges and electrical infrastructure in a southern Iranian province alongside the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran said its missiles targeted U.S. military aircraft at the international airport in Aqaba, Jordan, and claimed the attacks damaged U.S. transport and command and control aircraft there. The Iranian government also said U.S. missiles struck several Iranian cities early Monday local time. Jordan denied there were threats against installations at Aqaba, and the airport was operating again on Monday.

Iran expands retaliatory attacks across the Gulf

The U.S. Embassy on Sunday warned Americans to avoid the Aqaba airport and sea port due to threats. According to military experts, the U.S. has been moving more air defense assets inside Jordanian bases since the war in Iran began. Jordan's population is strongly opposed to supporting Israel due to its actions in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Iran widened its strikes across the Gulf, saying it attacked electricity installations and water desalination plants in Kuwait, which hosts a large U.S. military presence, and targeted Bahrain, home of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. The Iranian government said at least 3,000 Iranians, many of them civilians, have been killed since the U.S. and Israel began the war against Iran on Feb. 28, and reported at least 50 people killed and more than 500 injured in the latest U.S. strikes. The Iranian government typically reports only civilian casualties and releases no official figures on military losses.

Strait of Hormuz tensions and oil prices

Iran also said it disabled two oil tankers that attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz without its permission. The British military said a ship was burning near the Omani coastline in the Strait of Hormuz, described as a key oil shipping waterway. Oil prices topped more than $90 per barrel for benchmark crude on Monday.

The U.S. military said it still has not conducted a full review of the strike on a girls' school in Iran, which Iranian authorities said killed 168 children and 14 adults. Peace talks between the U.S. and Iran collapsed in dispute over a memorandum of understanding focused on the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic track remains stalled

CENTCOM described the Iraq incident as a 'controlled detonation' of a downed Iranian drone, the same terminology used for ordnance disposal operations in the region. The continued operations reflect the persistent threat from Iranian one-way attack drones, which have been downed in multiple locations across U.S. operating areas in the Middle East since the escalation began.
