Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator, said on Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz will be administered by the Islamic Republic of Iran in line with international law, following talks mediated by Qatar and Pakistan that are intended to yield a final agreement within 60 days.
Background of the statement
Qalibaf's remarks were carried by the Iranian state news agency IRNA and signal Iran's stated intention to take on a formal administrative role over one of the world's most important shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is the conduit for a significant share of globally traded oil. "Die Straße von Hormuz wird niemals in den Zustand vor dem Krieg zurückkehren, sondern im Einklang mit dem Völkerrecht von der Islamischen Republik Iran verwaltet werden", Qalibaf said on Tuesday, according to IRNA.
