After the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian leadership has announced retaliation for his death and described revenge as the demand of the people.

The Iranian state leadership announced retaliation immediately after the memorial ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a statement read on state television, attributed to his son and successor Mojtaba Khamenei, it was said: "Rache ist die Forderung unseres Volkes und muss ganz gewiss erfolgen". The letter was dated Friday and was broadcast on state television on Saturday.

In the statement, Mojtaba Khamenei announced that the "blood" of his father and predecessor, as well as that of all "martyrs" of the "two wars" against Israel and the USA, would be avenged. The choice of words underscores that the Iranian side frames the conflict as an ongoing struggle against two external powers. The memorial ceremonies themselves were, according to ZDF reporter Jörg Brase, "extremely anti-American" in character.

Background: Khamenei's death and the preceding events

The background to the escalation is an Israeli airstrike in which Ali Khamenei is said to have been killed on June 28. According to US media reports, he was injured following the attack; Iranian state television had already referred to him months ago as a "war invalid" without providing details. For more than five weeks, the USA and Israel conducted joint operations against Iranian targets after June 28.
