Washington, July 14, 2026

Iraq's Prime Minister Ali al-Saidi announced during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington the complete withdrawal of the US military from Iraq by September 30.

The date marks a political turning point: less than three months after the meeting at the White House, no US soldier should remain stationed in Iraq. The timeline confirms a step that has been discussed for years, according to official sources in Washington and Baghdad. Al-Saidi spoke of an "important decision" for his country's sovereignty.

The starting point was 2003, when the US invaded Iraq. The military operation led to the overthrow of then-ruler Saddam Hussein. At one point, more than 160,000 US soldiers were stationed in Iraq. After their withdrawal in 2011, only a small troop contingent remained, which was then increased again with the fight against IS.
