Israeli police stopped a car with a Palestinian driver in the West Bank because they suspected a kidnapping of a soldier – but the case took an unexpected turn.

Israeli police stopped a Palestinian man's vehicle in the West Bank because there was initially a fear that the driver might be kidnapping a female Israeli soldier. However, as it turned out, the passenger was not a kidnapping victim, but rather the man's partner. The police ended the operation after this discovery without taking further legal action against the two.

The case is nonetheless causing a stir because it makes the everyday tensions in the territory, which has been disputed for years, tangible. Israeli security forces have been on heightened alert since the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Gaza war. Sightings of mixed Israeli-Palestinian couples in public repeatedly lead to incidents with police and the military.
