The Italian Navy stopped the tanker "Toa Payoh" in the Mediterranean east of the island of Pantelleria on Saturday to verify the nationality and flag registration of the vessel.
According to the Italian Ministry of Defense, the operation on Saturday is intended to verify the nationality and flag registration of the "Toa Payoh." The ministry further stated that the ship had been boarded in the sea area east of Pantelleria. The measure is being carried out as part of the ongoing monitoring of maritime traffic in the central Mediterranean.
The operation is a contribution by Italy to the EU mission EUNAVFOR MED IRINI. This mission monitors the sea routes south of the EU in order to prevent sanctions violations and to stop the smuggling of goods. Italy participates, according to its own account, regularly with ships and personnel in the mission.
